The continental slope area between offshore Monopoli and the Gargano promontory (south Adriatic) has been investigated during the cruise SETE 2006 (SEdimentation and TEctonics). The main goals were: - to define the dynamics of the erosional and mass failure processes linked to the depositional sequences prograding forward the slope; - to understand the interaction between the sedimentary dynamics and the tectonic structure affecting the South Adriatic shelf and slope; - to understand the distribution and the lateral variability of fold and faults system along the deformation area known as Gondola faults; - to define the morphology of the areas affected by submarine slides and the morphology of the Bari Canyon (main submarine Adriatic canyon); - to detect and to study several areas affected by sediment waves and bottom currents depositional features (typically with growing direction towards the continental shelf); - to study the Bari Canyon and the relationship between the erosional phase and the advancement from the continental shelf; - to sample corals (living and sub-fossil) in canyon and in slope areas affected by bottom currents; - to collect long piston cores across stratigraphic sequences suitable to study the palaeoclimatic and the paleoceanographic evolution of the Adriatic sea.

Durante la crociera SETE 2006 (SEdimentation and TEctonics) è stata indagata l'area di scarpata continentale compresa tra l'offshore di Monopoli e il promontorio del Gargano (sud Adriatico). Gli obiettivi principali sono stati: - definire la dinamica dei processi erosivi e di cedimento massivo legati alle sequenze deposizionali che progradano lungo il ​​pendio; - comprendere l'interazione tra la dinamica sedimentaria e la struttura tettonica che interessa la piattaforma e la scarpata dell'Adriatico meridionale; - comprendere la distribuzione e la variabilità laterale del sistema di pieghe e faglie lungo l'area di deformazione, nota come faglia di Gondola; - definire la morfologia delle aree interessate da frane sottomarine e la morfologia del Canyon di Bari (principale canyon sottomarino adriatico); - rilevare e studiare diverse aree interessate da caratteristiche deposizionali di onde sedimentarie e correnti di fondo (tipicamente con direzione di crescita verso la piattaforma continentale); - studiare il Canyon di Bari e la relazione tra la fase erosiva e l'avanzamento dalla piattaforma continentale; - campionare coralli (vivi e subfossili) in canyon e in aree di versante interessate da correnti di fondo; - raccogliere carote attraverso sequenze stratigrafiche idonee a studiare l'evoluzione paleoclimatica e paleoceanografica del mare Adriatico.
