The aim of the oceanographic cruise SATOME_2013 (Slides and Tsunamics On the Malta Escarpment) concerns aspects that are closely linked to each other: the processes of instability that involve mass movements of sediments on underwater slopes, the potential of tsunami generation of underwater landslides and the recording sedimentary of tsunami events. The area affected by the survey is the eastern Sicily slope, in the sector between Catania and Malta; an area that has been repeatedly hit in the past by destructive earthquakes followed by tsunamis that have flooded much of the coast of eastern Sicily (eg 1908, 1693, 1169). The areas of interest along the Malta escarpment were covered by multibeam and Chirp sonar surveys. These data will integrate previous data sets of multichannel seismic profiles acquired previously and will serve to refine the tectonic interpretation of the area and the definition of areas subject to gravitational instability. The recovered cores and the related Chirp sonar and Sparker profiles will be used for the study of the depositional evolution of the platform areas adjacent to the Malta Escarpment and for the identification of potential depositional events due to tsunamis.
