Survey GEO-CAL2014

The GEO-CAL2014 oceanographic cruise provides for the acquisition of multi-disciplinary data close to the Pontine Islands and in the sea area between western Calabria and the Eolie Islands, in particular off the Capo Vaticano promontory, in the Gulf of S Eufemia and in the Panarea area. Zone1: includes a morpho-structural high (MS-High) off the promontory of Capo Vaticano, whose origin is still much debated. It also includes the continental shelf of the Gulf of S. Eufemia, where there are numerous small high morphologies on which biocenoses of corals proliferate. Zone2: represented by the area of Panarea. The direct measurement of the bottom flows was carried out with the Automatic Benthic Chamber, which was positioned in two craters at the eastern and western edges of a depression in the northern part of the area, already known for their hydrothermal activity. Zone3: area to the N and NE of the Pontine Islands, where a recent geophysical survey has brought to light elements that suggest the presence of a volcanic system.
