MAELSTROM: Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) - Mussel Farm 2022/2024
As part of the European MAELSTROM project, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) was conducted using a hydrophone deployed before and after the cleaning campaign carried out with a robotic platform at the Mussel Farm site. The primary aim of this acoustic monitoring was to analyze underwater soundscapes to detect the presence of soniferous organisms, with particular attention to fish and potentially invertebrate components.

- Continous passive acoustic monitoring surveys were conducted during the summers of 2022 and 2024 (from August 11 to September 28, 2022, and from August 13 to August 26, 2024). Recordings were obtained by using an autonomous passive underwater acoustic recorder, the Sono-Vault hydrophone by Develogic Subsea Systems. Several acoustic signals were detected, analyzed, and categorized. Among the identified species were Sciaena umbra and Umbrina cirrosa, recognized based on their characteristic vocalizations compared to previous sounds description (Picciulin et al., 2013). Furthermore, the recordings revealed two other distinct types of biological sounds, possibly produced by two different Crustacean species, which have not been described in the literature so far.
