Survey COCOMAP14

The oceanographic cruise COCOMAP14 aims to extend the bathymetric mapping acquired during the cruise COCOMAP13 in the south-eastern portion of the Adriatic basin and therefore to identify the main geomorphological features and the lithological and sedimentological characteristics that condition the presence of deep marine ecosystems. Furthermore, the cruise investigates new sites where the existence of deep coral ecosystems has been documented and the possible connection of these deep ecosystems with those of the platform, verifying the existence of bioconstructions through sampling and detailed mapping. The cruise is part of the European Union Program in the Seventh Framework called "COCONET" (Towards COast to COast NETworks of marine protected areas (from the shore to the high and deep sea), coupled with sea-based wind energy potential). The Adriatic-Ionian marine region is identified for a pilot project focused on the study of marine benthic communities from coastlines to bathyals aimed at understanding the relationships between the organisms of the selected Marine Protected Areas.
